A lot of the illegals left and went home because of the bad economy.  It isn't those people who are facing unpaid vacations but people who had worked here all their life and if you really think about the option of total unemployment then taking a vacation might not be the best but it sure bets having no job at all.

Many companies are giving their worker the choice that they can take off days without pay.  This let them take off an extra day or two over the holidays as well.  Yes, it take a bite out of your paycheck but it beats no paycheck at all

Funny, but even while I am on vacation, I usually work a little bit, and I have never minded.

But, if I'm on unpaid vacation, then I certainly wouldn't work at all, which would mean the first real vacation in years and years.

I would absolutely take a month off without pay to save my job.  I'd have to cut back a lot for a couple of months, but that one month of a real vacation would probably be worth every single minute.

But without the brains, i am not sure you can even survive what some of us do 1landscaper, you see some of us chose science and engineering careers since most americans were to weak to handle and rather opted for stuff like psychology, business, american idol etc... no wonder we are heading into an econ depression.

Shaka....interesting you would say something about people being with out brains..who would you be refering too? I am sure there are very many smart illegals here now..but..if they are so smart why do they allow so much unlawful people to ruin their own country? If they are so smart why can't they create new jobs in their own country? Rather than come here to get work work why can they not work at making their own country better and safer?

40% of DUKE University's engineering grads were reported to have not found a job last year - thanks to the foreign ones brought in. 

That researcher in the article has a $500 a month bill to repay her tuition.

Less than 30% of Americans graduate from college - many go, few finish. 

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE???  America needs a revamping of the education system and the immigration system needs to be fixed - neither one is working very well.

I'm a California State University Sacramento Electrical Engineering Graduate Student completing my Master's Degree and let me tell you; you are exactly right about the foreign engineers brought in the U.S. under the H1B program. I've been attempting to find a job for the better part of a year and have had NO responses to my resumes. My solution to the problem would be to do what the Doctors and Lawyers do and make EVERY Engineer (no matter what discipline) take the P.E. exam. As you know, to practice Law or Medicine in the U.S. you need to take the BAR Exam or the Medical Licensing Exam. The same requirement should also be applied to Engineers. This way, the actual demand for Engineers could be accurately measured by the number of licenses issued in the United States. This would also make it more difficult for companies that want to exploit cheap foreign labor and depress wages since the P.E. has only a 15% pass rate and you would have to pass the EIT/FE exam first.

DZ, you are not the only engineer I've heard say this, and it is disturbing to say the least - on many levels.  Not only should American engineers get first dibs, but as a parent paying tuition the thought that a 5+ year education does not necessarily pay off to my kid job-wise is well, infuriating.  There needs to be a reckoning, American employers need to get a grip on reality when hiring, and consumers need to see past saving a few bucks and buying foreign. The exam idea sounds very good.

Best of luck to you with your Masters, being in school is the best thing for young people in these times.  (I wish my kid would go to Sacramento - pretty downtown, but he'll probably end up in Socal.)

DZ have you though of applying this side of the pond. I'm in Transmission & Distribution and the bogus "market" we have in Europe kinda makes us recession proof (ish). Of course you'd need to get chartered at some point, but no rush.

Not too sure about the reasoning behind H1B, or what it is even. But over here some branches of engineering have become decidely un-sexy - T&D being one. We are happy to get anyone qualified.

      We've had to take "low census" days for years when our patient count is lower. It starts out as voluntary then becomes enforced with whose turn it is, going on who took off last gets to work. We have done this since the mid 1990's and continue today. If we take off it is with the option to do so without pay or use some of our banked vacation hours. Heck of a way though to have to use vacation time. Often you don't know until 2 hours before your shift and it may be a Tuesday in February when the skies are grey. Not a day to truly enjoy your vacation. That makes everyone skittish to take full weeks of vacation throughout the year too, the don't want to get too low on vacation days in case they need them for low census. We all base our lives/homes on either a 40 h our, 37.5 hour (which is where I've been for over 10  years), or 36 hour full time week. Forced days off make it hard to meet your monthly budget if you miss out on 8, 16, 24, or more hours from a paycheck. Also as of recently our upper management has had to take days off on a set schedule for example they all had to take at least 1 day off (either with or without pay) each pay period for 3 months. That is getting paid every 2 weeks. So it hits not only the little guys working but the upper management too.  Just makes us all wonder where it will all end and how hard hit our savings accounts will be when it does turn around. Bless us one and all.

      I work full time but we get one day off without pay in a two week period.  That makes for a seventy two hour paycheck.  The last two weeks were unpaid leave.  This September the job moves to another state.

      The business that I own (seperate) will continue on as it has for the last thirty six years.

      I am allready applying for another job.

      Many at the Company where I work will just be @!$%# out of luck.

      We have become a people of lazy means.

      We would rather lose our jobs entirely than lose a small portion of pay.  We pay lawyers and Unions untold amounts of money to stop these frivoulous means employers take to save the very business you work for.

      If employers did not ask for "Unpaid" vacations you might end up with an "UNPAID" unjob.

      Rick..to a degree you are right...in some lazy folks..but consider that our own government has give away programs all over the place....too many are allowed to collect money for doing nothing.

      Just put everyone on salary, then instead of having people take days off, you can just dock them the 8 hours and have them come in anyway. 

      If things get tighter you can dock them 16 hours and have them come into work anyway.

      I am getting paid for 12 hours a week now, but it is still better than nothing.

          Wildwonderful, sending the illegals back home can't work. Remember the U.S government is broke, very broke, now enforcing deportations  requires lots of money which government doesn't have. And we can't borrow anymore from the chinese since they have realised they will never be paid their money back - Anyway i have read in media that some Texas detention centers sometimes set illegals free, no place and resources to retain them. Now with Mr BO coming in office, i have a feeling that all illegals will be granted status. I think the other argument with the whole illegal immigration is that, the jobs they do most if not all american born folks dont want to do them. And also some employers will agree with me that most of these illegals have an excellent work ethic, come on time, very efficient and reliable, not like some americans who would fake sick-days, jump from one job to another, ask for more pay than what they deserve etc..

          Bottom line. Go to school, get a great education in "real stuff" or "real hard courses" that are promising - i suggest healthcare, engineering and sciences. Business Ad, Pysc, Sociology, Arts, American Idol studies/Women studies etc.... don't cut it, you will end up at McDonalds at the end. Again you need a great background right from HS, remember we foreigners if we can do it despite all odds against us, sure you can.

          deporting all the illegals would just make things worse! We have the same issues in the UK with the right wing @!$%#ing about eastern europeans, coming over here taking our jobs. blah blah blah blah.

          They are doing all the jobs no one here wants. And at piss-take wages that no one indiginous could afford to take. But without them, produce costs would soar. It is possible that illegals are being exploited soley by their employers, but I think if you looked real close you'd see that it goes a bit deeper than that. theres a whole black ECONOMY going on.

            Two percent cut in pay, six percent cut, big deal. The alternative is lay off that percentage of the workforce totally. Which do they prefer, a small reduction in work hours and pay, or complete job loss? Or is it the mentality that I don't care if someone next to me loses their job as long as it's not me? By the way, everyone should be saving 10% of their pay so any cut below that shouldn't effect much. If people are too stupid to save then that's their problem.

            Just to put it into perspective, Carrie Swartout, one of the persons named in the article, would make over $40,000 annually if 2% of her pay is $800. If she is so strapped that the $800 means that she can't pay a loan then she needs to consider bankruptcy as she has vastly overextended herself. It is hard to feel sorry for someone making almost double the median income.

              This is a time to get to know the greater humility in ones self, I can say from past experience " it sucks", if you are in a relationship watch out for power struggles and get used to concepts of downsizing. Also if you have children this is a great time to get to know them. Time with children does not have to be purchased, if you have family that you can stand start bunking together and try to be there for them.

              I am not surprised that employers are doing this in their efforts to cut the cost of doing business. What I do not understand is why they are doing so. Unpaid time off means less money to spend which translates to more unpaid time off, and so in a vicious circle which spreads to other businesses and the circle starts in these businesses. Where does it stop? I have even heard stories of people being fired, not becase of being troublemakers, lazy, or dishonest, but to save money. Those who are fired many times lose their company pensions and their unemployment compensation which is contested by the employer. Why? As for the pensions, they lose them due to being fired, which of course saves money for the employer since they do not have to give them their pension. Unemployment is contested for the same reason. Although the employer does  not directly pay the unemployment benefits, they do pay premiums to finance the program and to my understanding, the premiums increase if you have an increase in layoffs. In the opinion of this observer, these tactics are at best unethical and  in my view, blatantly dishonest. As for unpaid time off, I have had this requested of me a few times and a few times I have been told to take off because my job wasn't needed for a day or so.I will say that this time off was requested or ordered in order to save money and my employer  was forthright  enough to tell me so. This is something that I can understand, even if I don't like the idea. Taking a day off once in awhile certainly beats having every day off without pay. I suspect that we will see more of this during the current year as businesses struggle to make profits, which is why they are in business.

              I for one don't like the idea of non-paid vacation but I don’t see it is any big deal. When I was working if my employer didn’t provide for paid time off I curtailed such time off in order to reduce lost time wages. A vast majority of the work force have never received paid vacation time in the course of their employment because it was a condition of their job. They tolerated it and they will probably continue to tolerate it if they wish to receive a pay check. There isn't, that I know of, any God given right dictating employees must be paid for doing nothing in return for costing their employers money. Most recipients receiving paid vacation time receive any where from one to five weeks of compensated vacation time. Those one to five weeks of compensated pay results in loss of monies to their employers in two different ways. The first loss is the obvious loss of money being paid to employees for not working. The second loss is caused by lost of production/productive hours. If a company or institution provides paid vacation time that is their right and their employees are lucky to work for such a company. On the other hand if those institutions do not wish to pay for non productive work hours then that is their business. I couldn’t help but notice a lot of the entities mentioned in this article were state government departments, universities and other non private business institutions. To wit; they are entities who make no money and receive all their monies from the tax payer and they want me to feel sorry for them because they are going to have to start working for their wages. Please give me a break! My dad took two weeks a year off to go fishing and he never received one second of paid vacation time for doing so. He wanted to go fishing and he understood that in order to achieve that goal he would have to suffer two weeks lost wages. That was his choice and while he might have appreciated his employer paying him for his time he understood he in was no way entitled to such pay. If you want time off and your employer doesn’t want to pay you for it then you choices; don’t take the time off and get paid for working, switch jobs and work for an employer who will pay you for vacation time, or stay with your current employer and take the time off, lose the wages and shut the H&) %^% up.

              When will America realize that the fault of so many illegals being in America is not the illegals themselves.  They are merely here trying to support themselves.  The fault lies with our government and the Mexican elite.  By importing illegals our illustrious chosen few (government) keeps prices down and profits in the black for many business owners, they keep the chosen elite in Mexico, Central, and South America in power because they do not have to pay a fair wage.  I could go on and on with this.  The illegals themselves and the American worker are the victims in this conspiracy.  May the conspirators and destroyers of the worldwide middle class suffer an agonizing demise  and their souls rot in hell.

              Pepster, please don't be so simple.  You enact unenforced policies and laws, make it well known that you do not enforce them, offer amnesty to illegals that give them permanent residency, make their children born on U.S. soil immediate citizens like no other country on Earth, etc. etc.  Just create the right cllimate, "Build it and they will come".  That's how you import illegals.

              pep - the crooked employers, who take advantage of these illegal serfs and of Americans, artificially depressing wages.  Last year alone, 3 big INS raids happened in MS, IA, and SC, 600, 400 and 400+ illegal workers busted, but at least in Iowa they arrested the management and HR.

              It is not illegals, but rather the failed policies of several administrations and corporate greed that is leading to this trend.  I speak from experience... the last qtr of 08 I was forced to take 10 non-paid days off, then before I left an anouncement was made that all salary workers will take a 10% paycut in 09, along with other cuts and reductions in benefits.

              Take a look at CEO compensation, outsourcing and last but not least the countless billions that have been sent to Iraq alone and you can begin to see where most of the trouble is with the economy.

              Also, the American consumer is to blame for some of this as well. My wife an I have worked hard to live within our means, shun credit cards, invest/save and not worry if we are driving the latest vehicle or live in the newest/biggest house.  The unchecked spending on credit, placing a higher priority on wants over needs, and a general sense of entitlement has also contributed to the current economic state.

              Given all of this, I will wake up tomorrow morning, go to work, do my job and consider myself lucky to have a job to complain about.   Oh yea, one more thing, I am in the automotive industry and I have a BS and MBA, I have never felt that an "illegal" could come in an compete for my job.

              I've had some Engineering students from India in some of my under-grad and grad courses, and they weren't anymore talented than the U.S. born students in my courses. They are more likely to cheat on exams and work together on individual projects than the other students. They also somehow obtained exams from previous semesters and distributed the material among themselves. In one particular instance, I caught one cheating on the final exam. I confronted the person in question about the incident and gave him the choice of either turning himself in or I would report him to my professor and the Dean's Office. I later found out (confirmed with the instructor) that he received an F for the course. My point is that the foreign engineers are no more "talented" than U.S. engineers. I think the government allows for the abuses in the H1B VISA program because of what PartysOver mentioned about the federal income tax the government will end up keeping and bribes from lobbyist groups like the Chamber of Commerce who want cheap labor readily available. At any rate, if EVERY Engineer in the U.S. had to take and pass the P.E. Exam to practice engineering in the U.S., we would see if the foreigners are indeed more talented since the P.E. has a pass rate of 15%. That's worse than the BAR and  the Medical Licensing Exam.

              We are gearing up for deflation combined with hyperinflation by fall, 2009. Is anyone paying attention? Is anyone at the helm of this barge?

              I really hatae to be a pessimist but we are barking up the wrong tree. At this point, I recommend food, guns, ammo and a secure living arrangement. We are not in a good position to recover from this mess.

              Oh, and dare I mention the middle east? Israel and Gaza? Iran? Iraq? Afghanistan? Syria? The list goes on. The U.S.--insofar as the people were concerned--never had hegenomy as a goal but now it hangs over our heas as though it was our primary pursuit.

              Hunkering down and building local economies is what we have ahead. It will get worse before it gets better. Look for unemployment well above 20% by July. Depression? That's a joke compared to what we are headed toward.

              It is OK, as long as well all take the bitter pill.  This way, we can all be more compassionate.  Now, next time we see a bagger, many of us will not call him lazy.  Professionals normally have connections and have hidden resources, so there is no big deal in professors and architects taking some time off without pay.  Many of us see that as a way of life.

              I was in places that closed on me—five times—mergers, shot downs, relocation to overseas, etc. not counting other lay offs.  So we crossed to the next profession, and to the next.  After a while we became “jacks of all trades, masters of none”.   

              That is when our resume looks so nasty that HR specialists simple do not respond to our inquiries.  And than, with a spotty employment record and unemployed we simply run out of references and we became the lazy, the homeless, the divorced man, the dad-beat dads, and the lower class. 

              Now, nothing will change, of course; except perhaps talk-show hosts will make less reference of us as the homeless, the stinky, the filthy, the loafers, pan handlers, etc. 

              Those HR specialists, talk show hosts, and the politicians, and the upper class have never slept on the street, they have never had all their utilities shot off for months at a time, they never used hot water bottles to go to sleep with, they never had threats of tax foreclosures, they were never denied car registration because they did not have money to pay their car taxes, they never used newspapers to heat their home when the temp outside was -12 F, they never went to the local pond to fetch water because of shot offs. 

              It is great to ride on the Titanic.  Perhaps, when we get a stabilized economy, we will look at those without connections as real people too.

              On top of what you say here, of course remains the question on how many employers have shoved some of their workers on the street with the remark that their work wasn't good enough.  With that remark of the let-go, the employer will not be charged with UI payments through the state, as the person who was put on the street will have no right to claim UI benefits.

              Having worked in both union and non-union facilities, I think shops run smoother. The union members work better together because they know there is a fair system in place for them to fall back to if needed. Job postings, work shifts, and overtime are all done by seniority not by whom the boss likes the most. There are still plenty of good reasons to have a union in a work place.

              The company I worked for started doing this kind of thing 7 years ago.  It wasn't that the company was losing money; it was to cut costs in order to make the business more attractive to buy-out offers.  As time went by they cut costs in other ways: outsourced jobs, closed the cafeteria, got rid of office plants, across-the-board pay cuts, etc.  The CEO finally did succeed in attracting a buyer.  The owners were happy, the CEO was happy (he got a $5 million bonus), everyone was happy except the workers!  The very productive workers who had helped build the successful business in the first place.

                  I hope the union workers smarten up fast, because the unions are ready to take them over the cliff.  Lots of people need work; they'll be happy to be employed no matter what striking workers call them when they come in and out of a plant.

                  It's disheartening to hear the stories of the educated people in the chat.  We take a lot of flak from the uneducated, but those folks would be mad too if they invested money in developing their brains and can't earn a return on that investment.  If you don't educate yourself - well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

                  This does not apply to the profs - I know it's hard, you're first exposure to the real world, but hang in there.  I've never bought into research as work.  You write to impress each other, period.  It's mental masturbation.  I've haven't read any research you profs produce since I entered the real workforce.  Now, preparing class presentations, grading - that's work.  That's what students pay for and care about.

                  Are you actually suggesting that professors, researchers and educators are not required @GK?  Or did you just feel the need to place a posting before you went to watch your local hockey-game?

                  Researchers and educators pave the way for our future, and offer us a glimpse of our history.  Professors permeate their brains with knowlegde; knowledge they want to share through their writings, postings, editorials and public appearances.  They appear in guest colleges to share their knowledge, giving younger minds the chance of picking up pieces and learn even more through their own research.

                  Preparing class presentations and grading isn't work, it is stuff that needs to be done.  Students, at least the serious ones, don't care about the time you spend on grading their paper... they care about what you teach them, and how you teach it.  And a serious student can have his/her grade lifted from a D to a C (54% to 56%) by expressing interest in the class, participating in class, and having heart for the subject they study.

                  I am holding a final in my hands, I know that the teacher said that almost the entire class got the answer to number 2 wrong, and I did also, according to the teacher. 

                  I got a 91 on a 100 question test so that means I that I had 9 wrong answers. 

                  For any good student that is unacceptable. 

                  If the problem is semantics I need to understand what the difference is between answer B and answer D that makes B the correct answer and D the wrong answer. 

                  Looking up answers in the textbooks only offers me the opportunity to prove that my answers were correct, not that the teacher's answers were wrong.

                          The rule of thumb. Have at least 6 months of capital. (Money to cover expenses).  Unfortunately to many people have a credit card for that. Not the best plan. Will people learn?   Probably not. When there is a recovery it will be business as usual.  Some people lost a lot of money when the .coms crashed. the same ones lost the rest when the realestate came down. History repeates itself.
